Arrest made in weekend Clinton murder

CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now)-

Clinton Police Department's Interim Chief Mike Warren said upon further investigation, it appears a disagreement over a woman may have led to the death of a Jackson man.

The body of Mark Nichols, 21, of Jackson was found Saturday night in Clinton and an arrest has been made in Nichols' death.

Interim Chief Warren says Tommy Bass, 31, of Clinton, has been charged with murder in the death.

Tougaloo College gala honors civil rights icons

The honorees are Morris Dees, founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center; Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children's Defense Fund; Dr. H. Jack Geiger of Physicians for Human Rights and Robert "Bob" Moses of the Algebra Project.

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Tougaloo College recognized five decades of the civil rights movement and the icons who worked for change during a gala Saturday night in the Capital City.

The festivities were held at the Jackson Convention Center to honor men and women instrumental in Mississippi's desegregation efforts. In May, Tougaloo began an 18 month commemoration of the 50 year struggle for equal rights.

More arrests expected in Clinton H.S. bomb scare

CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Police say more people will be arrested in connection with the Clinton High School bomb threats.

Last week Clinton police arrested a Clinton Alternative School student in connection with several recent bomb threats to Clinton High School.

Interim Police Chief Mike Warren said he expects investigators to make more arrests in the case, most likely juveniles will be charged, he said.

Lumumba and Lee face off for another forum

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Jackson mayoral candidates will face off in another forum to explain their views on public schools in the capital city.

The forum was scheduled be start at 6 p.m. Sunday in the community room of the Jackson Medical Mall.

Democratic candidates as well as Independents were to present their educational platforms and visions for JPS during the forum. Afterwards, they will be allowed to answer questions from audience members.

The event is being hosted by "Parents for Public Schools of Jackson".

The Battle of Champion Hill

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now)- History came alive Saturday in Hinds County for the commemorative Battle of Champion Hill, near Raymond.

The 150th anniversary re-enactment was a celebration and remembrance for those who fought at what is called "The Hill of Death".

More than 6,200 union and confederate soldiers died during the battle.

Union troops, lead by General Ulysses S. Grant, pushed back the southern force on May 16th, 1863 which eventually led to the Siege of Vicksburg.

Many gardeners try to give their landscape the feel of an informal cottage garden. This garden concept has a loose, flowing feel, kind of like you just let plants grow wherever they happen to pop up in the landscape.

I had a professor way back in college who had a unique cottage garden planting method: He would walk through the landscape and just toss plants over his shoulder. We planted them where they landed. And you know what? His gardens looked awfully good.

Software glitch blamed for duplicate charges at restaurant

BYRAM, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Most people don't think twice about paying with plastic. But that changed for some customers at a Byram Mexican restaurant this week. Duplicate charges from Mama Kio's Grill started showing up on credit and debit accounts.
