Head of Corrections fired by Sheriff Lewis

Sources in the sheriff's department say Captain Mike Ivy's employment was terminated by Sheriff Tyrone Lewis Wednesday.

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Changes are in the works with the command staff at the Hinds County Sheriff's Department after the Head of Corrections is terminated by Sheriff Lewis.

Sources in the sheriff's department say Captain Mike Ivy's employment was terminated by Sheriff Tyrone Lewis Wednesday.

Ivy was hired as Head of Corrections by Sheriff Lewis when Lewis took over the department last year. Officials with the sheriff's department are calling it a personnel matter. They would not comment on why Ivy was let go.

New online tool for Hinds County voters

The County has launched a new page on its website that will use your zip code to tell you what precinct you're in, and where to vote. It will also fill you in on who your state and local elected officials are.

Teen to have mental evaluation after firing shots

Hinds County Sheriff's Department authorities say a teenager is holding his mother hostage in a house in Raymond.

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Hinds County Sheriff's Department authorities say a teenager is in custody after what was originally reported as a hostage situation Wednesday evening.

A Standoff between hinds county law enforcement and a teenager has ended.

Authorities say the 14-year-old threatened to shoot anyone who came near the house.

This all took place at 1887 McFarland Road in Raymond.

Jackson father gets 25 years for raping daughter

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now)- A Jackson father was sentenced to 25 years in prison Wednesday for raping his 12-year-old daughter.

Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith says John Johnson, 43, pleaded guilty to statutory rape Monday.

Johnson will not be eligible for release from prison until 2030 and will have to register as a sex offender.

"I'm pleased to see a guilty plea in this case," said Smith. "This spares the victim from testifying and frees a Hinds County courtroom for another trial."

Bicyclist struck and killed on Natchez Trace

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Officials say a bicyclist was struck and killed on the Natchez Trace Parkway in Hinds County Tuesday evening.

According to parkway officials, George Wimberly, 52, of Bay Minette, AL, was riding his bicycle north on the parkway when he was struck by a Nissan Versa driven by Norris Edney, 52, of Clinton.

The crash happened near at Milepost 77 around 5:48 p.m. Wimberly was pronounced dead at the scene.

The roadway in the area was closed for about four hours as a parkway reconstruction specialist analyzed the scene.

4 sought in carjacking of Clinton college student

CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Clinton police are trying to identify the men who carjacked and robbed a Mississippi College student at gunpoint last week. Several surveillance cameras captured images of the suspects.

Police say the female student got gas and paid at the pump at the Exxon on Springridge Road around 10 p.m. April 2. She then drove to the Reserve at Woodchase apartments and was texting in her car when a man got into her passenger seat and another man came to the driver's side door.

More than a dozen arrested for SNAP, TANF fraud

The Mississippi Department of Human Services says its investigators uncovered thousands of dollars in fraud recently.

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now)- The Mississippi Department of Human Services says its investigators uncovered thousands of dollars in fraud and made several arrests recently.

According to MDHS more than a dozen people were arrested for defrauding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. MDHS says more than $300,000 in restitution and fines will be repaid with these recent arrests.
