Byram police seek information in rash of auto burglaries

The Byram Police Department is seeking information after a number of vehicles were burglarized Sunday night.

Police say the unknown suspects burglarized 12 vehicles in the area of South Ridge Road and Lake Shore Drive in the Lake Ridgelea neighborhood.

The suspects stole items including electronics from unlocked vehicles.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 601-355-8477.

Callers can remain anonymous and receive a reward if information leads to an arrest.

Byram man sentenced to life for hammer beating death

MADISON COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A Byram man was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of capital murder in the beating death of a man in October 2011.

Madison and Rankin Counties’ District Attorney Michael Guest says Jonathan Scott Keen, 29, approached 50-year-old Kerry Prisock, a handy man living in his van at the Reservoir, and beat him to death during a robbery. After killing him with a hammer, Keen stole the van with Prisock’s body still inside.

HINDS COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Byram police are trying to identify a suspect in a theft at a local hardware store.

Police say the suspect went into the Revell Ace Hardware Store at 5726 Terry Road on Sept. 25 and said he was an employee of a customer with a charge account to the store.

The man then charged portable lawn equipment to the customer’s account. Revell contacted police after they tried to collect on the outstanding debt with the customer.

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Authorities say a Jackson man was shot and killed Friday after he borrowed a hammer and then used it to beat the man he borrowed it from.

Hinds County Sheriff’s Office officials say Bennie Davis, 57, and his son-in-law Zachary Ragusa, 24, were working in their yard on Highway 18 in Utica when Jerome Freeman, 49, asked to borrow a hammer.

Freeman, 49, was working at a construction site across from the residence, according to the sheriff's office.

Hinds Co. employee accused of accepting bribes

HINDS COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A Hinds County employee has been indicted for allegedly accepting bribes.

Steven Walter, 51, was arrested in August. Thursday, a Hinds County Grand Jury served him the indictment.

Walter is charged with two counts of accepting bribes from defendants to fix cases.

He's accused of committing the crime while employed as a clerk at the Hinds County District Attorney's Office.

Walter turned himself into the Hinds County Sheriff's Office.

He was released on $50,000 bond.
