Sheriff: Man killed after borrowing hammer, beating man who loaned it

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Authorities say a Jackson man was shot and killed Friday after he borrowed a hammer and then used it to beat the man he borrowed it from.

Hinds County Sheriff’s Office officials say Bennie Davis, 57, and his son-in-law Zachary Ragusa, 24, were working in their yard on Highway 18 in Utica when Jerome Freeman, 49, asked to borrow a hammer.

Freeman, 49, was working at a construction site across from the residence, according to the sheriff's office.

Ragusa reportedly handed Freeman the hammer, and then Freeman hit Ragusa in the head and all over his body with it.

Sheriff’s officials say Davis then got a handgun and fired rounds over Freeman’s head warning him to stop. When Freeman didn’t stop, Davis fired at Freeman and Ragusa.

Freeman was pronounced dead at the scene. Ragusa was transported to a local hospital and listed in stable condition.

No arrest has been made. The case will be sent to the Hinds County District Attorney’s Office for Grand Jury review.
