Mississippi College Hosts Clinton Political Forum

Candidates for Clinton mayor and the city’s Board of Aldermen will join citizens at a political forum on the Mississippi College campus April 18.

The Clinton Chamber of Commerce will host the event beginning at 7 p.m. in Swor Auditorium. It’s a good opportunity for Clinton voters to size up the candidates just weeks before the May 7 party primaries.

Winter supports Landmark Center for Dept. of Revenue

Former Governor William Winter says it is vital that the State of Mississippi choose to buy the old Landmark Center in downtown Jackson as the location for the State Department of Revenue. 

It is now located in temporary warehouses south of Clinton where it has been for over 15 years, being promised new quarters.  

The House Speaker, who represents Clinton, wants it moved to his home area in the old World Com Building. Winter says the future of downtown Jackson could very well ride on the decision to put the department downtown.

New jail proposal passes on second try

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The Hinds County Board of Supervisors have started things in motion to build a new detention center. The motion passed Monday afternoon on a 3-2 vote.

The "concept" of building a new facility, presented by District 5 Supervisor Kenneth Stokes,  failed on a 2-2 vote in Monday morning's meeting.

Supervisor Stokes endorses candidate, wife

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Just days after former Ward 3 Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes was sworn in as a Hinds County Supervisor, he endorsed a candidate Sunday afternoon to fill his vacant seat.

LaRita Cooper-Stokes, wife of the newly sworn-in Supervisor, is vying for the post.

Cooper-Stokes said, " I am here today to announce my candidacy for Ward 3.  Ward 3 is the heart of Jackson and I have a heart for the job."
